Riding the Wave: Handling ADHD Stimulant Crashes

Living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can be a rollercoaster of experiences. While stimulant medications can significantly improve focus and attention (I know I feel like I can’t live without them) they may also lead to stimulant crashes as the medication’s effects wear off. I don’t know about your experiences, but stimulant crashes really F me up; however, we can learn to “ride the wave” and manage their impact on us.

Did somebody say crash?

Stimulant crashes occur when the effects of medications like methylphenidate (Ritalin) or amphetamines (Adderall) begin to fade, leading to a sudden decline in focus, energy, and concentration. Some of us may experience feelings of fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and mood swings – or if you’re like me, an overwhelming urgency to pass out.

1. Study Yourself and Establish a Routine

Get to know your body and your timings of when you take your meds, when they feel effective and when they ware off. Journal about it daily if necessary. Plan your day around it so you are not caught by surprise.

2. Engaging in Physical Activity to Boost Energy Levels

My least favorite tip, but I admit it is effective. Sometimes I will walk the dogs at a time of day when I might rather be napping, and the sunshine gives me a little boost. Even walking the trash to the dumpster helps.

3. The Power of Naps: Strategic Rest to Recharge

Oh this one is my fav. I love me a good nap. The key is to find the right length so you don’t wake up foggy or cranky. Set multiple alarms!

4. Utilizing Non-Stimulant ADHD Medication Options

Not a chance! I mean, no judgement. You do you, but my brain needs some chemical assistance unfortunately.

Remember that ADHD is a unique journey for each person, and finding effective coping strategies may require some trial and error. Keep your medical team updated. Be open to new options. Seek out knowledge from various sources. Find a supportive community.
